This article will contain spoilers for the following official media on this wiki: The Story An Unfortunate Invasion Misfitted Adventures |
"AS THE SLASH SHALL SUIT ME… SO WILL THE SNOW SUIT THE INNER GUTS OF YOUR SPILLED CARCASS!"
– Sans, confronting "Frisk" in the build-up to the Battle of Snowdin Town.
Sans is a male monster with natural Determination who serves as the main focal point of the Insanitytale continuity[2] through his unprecedented invasions of the Multiverse. He appears as the protagonist in The Story and a secondary protagonist in "ANTI-PRESENCE" while appearing as a secondary antagonist[3] in Amalgamation of the Likewise, and a central antagonist in An Unfortunate Invasion Part I and Part II. He also appears as the main protagonist in the Misfitted Adventures series of short stories, sharing that role with his ally Rose. Albeit unnamed and unseen, his presence is hinted at briefly at the end of the novel A Wilted Origin, as his Dread Aura lures Rose to Mt. Ebott likewise with his other human victims suffering a similar fate.
He has gone insane after being hunted by Frisk for weeks after the genocide route, and has built up LOVE and EXP by slaughtering dozens of humans who foolishly fell down Mt. Ebott during his time hiding. After meeting Rose, a Kindness human who managed to slip behind his mania and win his trust through her empathy, relatability and understanding, he would finally defeat his enemy in the Battle of Snowdin Town and leave his timeline, continuing on to invade and occasionally destroy several timelines[4] to absorb their energy and become stronger, in order to complete his maddening quest to exterminate all Humans, catalysed by "PAPYRUS", his brother.
Later on, during his conquest of the Multiverse, Sans would be lured into invading the then Reaper's Swordsmen recruit AvengeTale! Sans's timeline, which would escalate into a grand battle between him accompanied by Rose, and AvengeTale. This battle would (accidentally) leave Rose mortally wounded and eventually deceased, prompting Sans in a fit of confused rage to enter his last stage of Madness, becoming completely devoid of individual reasoning as his slowly rotting body is hijacked by his ghostly brother.
Appearance & Relations
Sans's design during his time hiding from the First Human and slaughtering of the Humans who fell down MT. Ebott.
The once smug and laidback Sans is now disgruntled and deprived, with ash discolouring around his eyelids. A faint trail of blood coats the side of his mouth as a result of his fatal wound. His eyes are manic and inconsistent, typically however they are small red dots - though they are also commonly rings of red or purple (only in the left eye) that range in size.

Having ditched his blue hoodie, Sans wears an oversized green jacket he'd received as a Christmas present from his brother,[5] and long brown trousers that are tucked into a pair of darker plain boots. He still wears a discoloured white t-shirt, showcasing the deep wound across his ribs with an outline of blood. His formerly white Monster SOUL is now a pale shade of red for DETERMINATION, growing intense around the edges.
He typically carries a hefty improvised axe, composed hastily of scraps and bobs that he could find in Alphys's lab. It consists of two grey pipes, one an elbow and one straight, sloppily connected by a black plastic handle. The straight pipe is wrapped with a thick brown bandage near the top which holds in place two blades, one being a hook with nails smashed into it and the other being a simple axe head with an additional thinner part attached, redder than the rest of the blade as it is the most concentrated point of EXP. Jammed into the top of the straight pipe is a red shard of broken metal used as a makeshift halberd spear. This axe would go on to be the precursor to the axe that Sans typically uses in his conquests, the Axe of a Thousand SOULs.
Sans's current design at his most recent narrative point in the continuity.
Sans dons the same dark green jacket, only torn at the arms and bruised from wear and previous combat. He now wears cargo taupe shorts and slimmer boots that are a similar shade, black fingerless gloves also clothe his hands now. Underneath his jacket he switched out his dirty shirt for a black turtleneck sweater, and across his torso is a leather strap which at the back holds his axe with a magnet that snaps away when tugged.

Visual reference for his design.
The Axe of a Thousand SOULs is a lot sleeker than its sloppy predecessor and is no longer dented and bent from the mediocre experimentation that Sans had to go through in order to make it in the first place. The bandage is missing, and the blades are now welded to a darker grey pipe instead which was connected to the previous straight pipe, and has an abnormal gape at the top to fit in a new halberd spear with a razor-sharp tip. The pipes are a lot thicker as well as no longer being hollow and made of a stronger metal, increasing its durability. The black handle is now coated in leather fabric.
His dishevelled skeletal face is draped with a malicious grin which can often grow crazed if he is particularly distraught or mad. Across his right eye socket is a thin scar that breaks away around his chin, which he obtained from a particularly horrific encounter. He retains his smaller red eyes, however they are more consistently spherical as opposed to occasionally ring-shaped, and he is commonly seen with a much larger eye taking up his left eye socket, composed of a solid purple centre with a red outline, and a black pupil in the centre also outlined in red. The back of his skull is vaguely scratched and marked from the rubbing of the nails of his axe, but he feels no pain from the wound. His SOUL is now completely red, with purple MADNESS encroaching on the sides. As he grows more demented, the purple overtakes more of the red.
His height and stature are grotesque, broad and disfigured due to the effects of MADNESS on his body. As a result he has grown staggeringly to over 7 feet tall, his previously oversized jacket now being just right for him.Personality
Sans is a tired yet stubborn alcoholic (a habit he got into in order to numb the nightmares of his past) who developed Madness from his trauma suffered from being hunted by Frisk for a month, and the mania subsequently grown from stalking, butchering and occasionally cannibalising[6] humans who entered the Underground after the genocide route.
He derives pleasure from sadism when he is particularly upset or drunk, taunting, manipulating and then slowly killing his human victims. Most of the time however he is quite docile, appearing more disgruntled than actually malicious and killing out of pure hatred alone. His attitude towards his own race has changed a lot since the start of his journey, becoming less optimistic and remorseful, and more annoyed by their fear or retaliation. He particularly hates monsters that are different to the ones he remembers from his timeline,[7] and will deliberately target them if he encounters them in his travels. This also includes variants of himself.
He is incredibly abrasive, and lacks a filter when interacting with others. This often comes as a benefit in scaring his enemies, but can also result in him getting into unnecessary fights that he never wanted to actually initiate, resulting in him usually getting his ass handed to him if the person in particular is a powerful opponent.
Sans's actions and behaviour are fuelled by his parasitic, illusive brother, which often manifest as sudden mood swings or bursts of anger. His influence is largely kept at bay by Rose, whose rational and compassionate aura serves as positive clarification to his inner frustrations, which combined with her helping him overcome his fear, and her utility as a support to him during his fights, led to Sans viewing her as different from the rest of humanity, enough to be spared. That doesn't stop him from, when he is in a more sadistic mood, angry at her, or simply under his brother's influence, infrequently taking that anger out on her when she tries to calm him, and abusing her physically and verbally.
Connections
Friends, Allies and Family
- Rose | His one and only friend, the mediator of his MADNESS and the only cling to reality Sans really has left. Through her kindness she would eventually whittle down Sans and become a source of comfort for the serial killer that is Sans, prepping him up to face his enemy once and for all. Now the pair of them rely on each other as they travel throughout the Multiverse, maintaining a toxic, often one-sided friendship.
- "PAPYRUS" | His ghostly and corrupted brother, bound by sheer DETERMINATION to Sans's SOUL and festers on his MADNESS. He showed Sans how to summon wormholes into other universes, and assisted him in his various trips across the Multiverse. It is truly unknown if "PAPYRUS" can die, but chances are there will be consequences.
Enemies
- "Frisk" | The eighth fallen Human. Being the sole individual responsible for the massacre of Sans's race, Sans wanted them dead even after Toriel had promised him to keep them safe. Unfortunately his first effort would go awry and end up with him nearly dying, an event which he still has burned into his memories even a year later. This would provoke him going into hiding upon realisation of his survival, and eventually through Rose's consoling, would fight them one last time, proving victorious. Even with their defeat, Frisk still continues to haunt Sans's psyche and is part of his unyielding motivation to end Humanity.
- AvengeTale! Sans | A disciple of the Reaper's Swordsmen and the Omniversal Chosen. Avenge wanted Sans dead after Sans invaded and killed everyone in his AU. AvengeTale, in a desperate attempt to kill Sans, fabricated an alternate universe called Altertale. The trap worked for the most part, but it only made Sans hellbent on killing him, as the trap had indirectly killed Rose.
- Reaper's Swordsmen | A Multiversal faction tasked with maintaining the natural balanced flow of life and death. Due to his crimes of omnicide as well as destroying timelines, he along with Rose were deemed outlaws by the Multiversal order and the Swordsmen were tasked with assassinating them. This would prove harder than they had thought, leading to some of their members to even use encountering Sans (legitimate or not) as an excuse to flee their roles in the faction.[8]
- Alphys | The one he left behind, and who has not forgiven him.
Weapons & Abilities
These are the abilities Sans has had since before his near-death experience against the human.
- ENHANCED REFLEXES: "Sans can dodge attacks even while asleep, though this wears quickly with his stamina."
- INTELLIGENCE: "Sans is much smarter than an ordinary individual, seemingly originating from a scientific background and understanding fundamental laws of reality that no others have realised."
- OSTEOKINESIS: "The ability to summon and manipulate bones. Using this, Sans can create bones of various sizes to use in combat or for utility purpose."
- GASTER BLASTERS: "White dragon skull-shaped entities that charge and fire a beam in the direction they face. Come in different sizes and require more energy to use the bigger they are."
- COLOURED MAGIC: "Sans can use this in conjunction with OSTEOKINESIS to make his bone attacks blue to force the opponent to stop, or turn the opponent's SOUL blue to hinder their movement."
- TELEPORTATION: "Sans can warp almost seamlessly across long distances by obscuring himself behind a surface, and others too, what he calls a 'shortcut'."
- TELEKINESIS: "It is truly unknown the extent of how Sans could use this, but this ability can allow him to manipulate an individual's velocity."
These are the abilities that Sans has gradually learned and obtained over the course of his slaughtering of the Fallen Humans.
- THE AXE: "A weapon of carnage, the final sighting of the unfortunate SOULs put to agonizing rest under its blade. Sans crafted it in Alphys's lab using lost scrap recovered from various areas in it, barely even being held together right, but able to do its job. A spear for impalement, a hook for ripping alongside prongs on the hook to snare and serrate, and of course the part of the axe that does the chopping. It holds the energy of every Human he slayed with it. Despite it's threatening nature, Sans has constantly had to repair the Axe, it being shoddily made and easily destroyed."
- INTELLIGENCE: "While he does maintain most of his mental capacity, he is much more prone to not second-guessing his decisions before executing them. As a result he can often misjudge his own potential, which can get him into some tricky scenarios. Due to his fragile trauma-ridden state in this period of time he is also susceptible to manipulation much more than before."
- INSANITY! BLASTERS: "An upgraded form of the Gaster Blaster, darker with pulsing red eyes, it can deal more damage at a bigger scale, firing speed and length at the cost of taking more power to use. The beam is a light mixture of red and white."
- OSTEOKINESIS: "Bones now deal more damage and are much denser on average, with a red decrepit staining on them."
- TELEPORTATION: "Sans can warp longer distances and much quicker, not needing to obscure himself anymore."
- MADNESS: "MADNESS is the toxic by-product of when a mentally unwell individual possesses far too much DETERMINATION for their own good. The results of MADNESS can be lethal to most, leading to suicide or acts that would otherwise put themselves in danger. This by-product is rooted in Sans's hatred for Humanity, and will only grow more powerful as his desires to murder them increase."
- DREAD AURA: "An effect of MADNESS. Due to an intense, unstable ratio of MADNESS to DETERMINATION, Sans emits a constant aura of dread. This effect is the cause of why so many children had fallen into MT. Ebott over the course of the story, luring them as a means of escape from the harsh world that laid outside. Dread Aura is completely unpredictable as it is subjective. It is typically most effective on those with trauma or intense negativity, or those who are highly positive in nature. It has led some, such as Alphys, to go completely insane."
- MADNESS DISFIGUREMENTS: '"A spontaneous effect of MADNESS. Sans's body shape has deformed grotesquely over the month he spent in hiding, which has given him a much bulkier and taller build. His arms have also become unnaturally long and his muscle density was amped up tremendously."
- SENSUAL ENHANCEMENT: "Sans's MADNESS would afflict his senses overtime, causing him gain the ability to irrationally predict the presence of a Human lest they are positive enough to resist the effects of Dread Aura, such as Rose. This can heighten his reactions, especially during combat, and make him hyper-aware of the opponent's moves. Pain also becomes easier to shrug off, even when being struck with a powerful attack, such as an energy bullet."[9]
- MELEE COMBAT EFFICIENCY: "Training overtime with the Axe, as well as garnering usage out of it during his murder spree, would build up Sans's skill overtime when it came to using it. He is also aware of the Axe's inherent flaws and tries to surpass them as much as possible in combat, though this typically doesn't work out and the Axe breaks apart regardless."
- HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT EFFICIENCY: "Adopting the Axe as his main weapon, Sans would also grow much more fluent in hand-to-hand combat as a result. He typically does not need to use this skill unless to counter an enemy if his Axe is unavailable, however he would usually use his magic in these cases regardless."
- DECAPITATION STRIKE: "This ability is Sans's modus operandi when it comes to defeating his opponents. For more information see the Axe's page."
- PERSUASION: "Sans became a lot more manipulative as he killed, eventually getting to a point where he would persuade his victims that he was only a friend mainly just for laughs, taking sadistic pleasure in seeing them fall for his scheme before he would behead them. He can also use this skill strategically to pick at his opponents' heads and break them."
- SAVE & LOAD CORRUPTION: "While not being able to use them himself, if his DETERMINATION is enough to overpower the next best individual, he can completely corrupt their SAVE and render them at risk of permadeath."[10]
Abilities that Sans has either refined, learned or obtained through his invasions of the Multiverse.
- THE AXE: "Along with everything, it has seen numerous revisions and upgrades, now being a lot more durable, sleeker and deadlier. Sans has also learned new abilities that he can perform using this weapon, including one which would become the most devastating and infamous ability of his during his reign of terror."
- SENSUAL ENHANCEMENTS: "Along with having a much quicker reaction time, Sans's senses are heightened enough to the point where he can feel the influence of a Human's DETERMINATION from timelines, using this as a method of selecting his next invasion."
- ENERGY SLASHES: "By swiping the Axe at high speeds, Sans can expel high-energy crescent waves that explode on contact with a surface. For more information see the Axe's page."
- HEALING: "An ability taught by Rose. When he puts his mind to it, he can gradually replenish his HP and even close up wounds. However, this ability is exclusive to only himself."
- WORMHOLES: "Though he mainly relies on his brother for this, he himself has learned to conjure wormholes via slashing down with his Axe and tearing open space-time. The only reliable usage he can get out of this is an emergency escape to his base timeline, though the unique way he opens them has led to debate for a lot of entities who study his invasions, as they are unable to be traced and can actually serve as an unreliable method to cut people/objects or completely redirect an attack. For more information see the Axe's page."
- TIMELINE OBLITERATION: "By far the most absurd and powerful ability that the Axe has to offer, charging it enough can give it enough strength to detonate the surface of a small timeline, causing a chain reaction which eventually culminates in the timeline's annihilation. Due to the obscene amount of energy required to make it work, the toll on Sans's body and mind is almost enough to kill him (but will if misused), causing excruciating migraines and even complete paralysation at its worst. For more information see the Axe's page."
Trivia
- Sans hates a multitude of things that distinctly remind him of the genocide route. Most particularly, this includes his own face (which is part of why he despises other variants of himself) and being slashed across the chest, but some other minor triggers include the sight of golden pillars and the shade of blue that he wore that day.
Happy CHUNG, made by Gen396.
- His first official theme was made by Jinify on YouTube.[11]
- The "Holy Mother of God" purple blasters that Sans uses are informally referred to as "CHUNG" in Ch1kn's community.
- During Sans' free time with Rose other than getting drunk, the two often play board games with each other - unsurprisingly Sans is a sore loser, but he never gives up. This also extends to other activities the pair can engage with in other timelines, most notably at one point they had a snowman contest.
- Sans crafted the axe out of spare parts found in Alphys' lab. Because of this, the axe appeared to be rather unprofessionally made as Sans isn't a blacksmith, until he eventually got good at the craft and made a version of the axe that was sleeker and more durable.
- Sans's favourite alcohols are whiskey and vodka; he prefers whiskey when actively trying to get drunk and rowdy, but will generally use vodka when more coherent and just wanting to suppress his trauma.

- ↑ He appears in a notable role in almost every storyline and is the main catalyst of events in the continuity.
- ↑ Though he is only on-screen for a few lines, his influence extends far greater than just his appearance.
